About the Rapid Decision Unit Our Rapid Decision Unit (sometimes referred to as an observation unit or clinical decision unit) is an integral part of the Emergency Department. Its sole use is for ED patients who require a short period of observation, evaluation, testing, treatment and medical management typically for a maximum of 24 hours. This unit is dedicated to provide efficient protocol-based care to patients with well-defined diagnoses or presenting symptoms such as chest pain, asthma, and congestive heart failure. Only approximately one-third of US hospitals currently have a unit like this.
